Why I LOVE Self Checking Math

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

I'm one of THOSE teachers that can't bring myself to let my kids do crafts that don't contain SOME form of learning! This year I created Math Riddle Cards that are self checking.... Let me give a few reasons WHY I love self checking when it comes to math...

Why I love SELF CHECKING MATH....

  1. I know that students are striving for the correct answer.
When students are only exposed to multiple choice or open ended answers they do not always get instant feedback.  Therefore, circling/bubbling in an answer is the gratification in itself.  Kids feel gratification when they circle an answer or bubble it in whether it is correct or not.  This isn't real life! In real life, we feel gratification when the problem we are faced with is SOLVED.
When students are given self checking work, they strive for the correct answer because they want to SOLVE the riddle! If their work is not correct, the problem they are faced with is not solved.
  2. Self Checking raises self awareness!
When students turn in work and have no clue whether or not they are correct, many times they have a false sense of their abilities.  Instant feedback gives students the opportunity to become more aware of their abilities.
  3. Self Checking teaches persistence!
Students are given a problem in which they WANT to solve because their peers are also solving the problem, and in this case, the solution to their problem yields a fun riddle answer! Students, therefore, work hard to try, try, try again!!! The hope is that as teachers we create enough opportunities for our students to practice persistence that it becomes innate.
There you have it.............. Self Checking Riddle Math is FUN and it teaches REAL LIFE skills!!

:) Happy Valentines Day!
